Perfecting AI Translations

Introduction

GPT does a really great job of translating Shopify app listings, but due to the character limits on Shopify's app listing fields, it's not uncommon for the translated fields to go over the character limit. In those cases, TranslateCI uses AI to rephrase the field in order to shorten it. This is a great way to get a translation that's close to the original, but it's not perfect. In this article, we'll show you how to get the best possible AI translations.

Shortening the Text

Let's take a look at an example. Here's the original English text:

UpCart lets you create a custom, on-brand slide cart with upsells and add-ons to boost AOV.

Here's the AI translation, condensed to fit within the 100 character limit:

UpCart offre des upsells et add-ons pour augmenter le CAV avec un chariot personnalisé.

Translated back to English, it reads:

UpCart offers upsells and add-ons to increase AOV with a customized cart.

When We Can't Shorten the Text Enough

In some cases, we can't shorten the text enough to fit within the character limit. In these cases, you'll see the translation in the completed listing has a light red background.

In these cases, you'll need to shorten the text yourself. Here's how to do that:

Click the Edit button next to the field you want to edit. You'll see the original text. You can edit the text in the Original field and TranslateCI will use that text to generate a new translation.
